NTAC Establishes Transgender Bereavement Fund

On Wednesday, August 14, 2002, the NTAC Board of Directors by a unanimous decision, established the NTAC Bereavement Fund to help family and friends in the transgender community defray costs associated with the loss of a loved one: including memorial services, cremation, burial, and interment. The fund is designed for short-term, targeted fundraising.

In Memory of Joshua Smith, 19-year old son of surviving parent Chris Smith, bereavement funds* will be used to assist Chris in providing a memorial service, cremation, and inurnment for his son.

Also in Memory of Ukea Davis and Stephanie Thomas, bereavement funds* will ensure that supportive friends, family, and allies have the opportunity to mourn Ukea and Stephanie as they knew them.

The board has made an initial contribution of $200.00.

For more information and details on how you can make an online contribution, please visit the NTAC web site at:

* 100% of all contributions to the Bereavement Fund received before August 31, 2002 will be distributed equally to Joshua Smith's surviving parent, Chris Smith, and to Transgender Health Empowerment (T.H.E.), the organization coordinating the Memorial Service for the slain teenagers in Washington, DC. Contributions received after August 31, 2002 will be kept in reserve for future bereavement needs within the community.
